👋

Hello 1st Grade Families!

Happy September! We have two things to look forward to this week.

Thursday, September 24, at 2:45 pm is our first 1st Grade Birthday Celebration, for all our August and September birthdays. Families are welcome to send or bring healthy snacks, such as fruit, for students to share during the celebration. Please, no candy or candy party favors.

Bancroft's monthly Community Meetings start this month. These are assemblies where students come together, sing the Bancroft song, and celebrate one another. This month's theme is Everyone Has a Place at Bancroft. DR, Venezuela, and Managua have their first community meeting this Friday, September 25; Colombia, España, and Cartagena have theirs the following Friday, October 2. Please help your child practice the Bancroft song at home — the lyrics are one tap away!

Math News

This week your child keeps practicing counting on to add. They learn to spot a part they recognize inside a larger group, say that number, and count on the rest instead of starting over at 1. They also count on from 10: "Teeeen, 11, 12, 13." On Friday we carry the same strategy into addition stories as Topic C begins.

Two dice showing 5 and 2. Counting on from 5: Fiiiive, 6, 7, so 5 + 2 = 7. Counting on from 2: Twoooo, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, so 2 + 5 = 7

Key terms: count on, doubles (5 + 5), unknown (the number we are trying to find)

Try this at home — Find Real-World Totals: Look for chances to count on during your day. Fingers are a great way to keep track!

• "This new box holds 10 granola bars, and the open box still has some. Can you count on from 10 to find how many we have in all?"
• "There are 5 cars in this lot and 3 empty spaces. Can you count on from 5 to find the total number of parking spaces?"

Literacy News

SLA: This week we move from maps of our city to maps of a country. Students will read and discuss texts to answer the question: What does a map of my country look like? They are learning words for what they see on a country map, such as border, state, mountain, and desert. In word study, we are reading and writing words with consonant blends, such as libros, madre, tigre, and frío. At home, look for words with these blends in books or magazines, and help your child write a sentence using one of them.

ELA: We continue our Maps unit by exploring the 7 continents and 5 oceans, visiting a few continents each day through photographs and maps in an atlas. We have been singing a song about them, so ask your child to sing it for you and see what they know! On Friday we zoom all the way in to something much smaller: a neighborhood, like our own Mount Pleasant.

Reading at home: Please have your child read to you for at least 20 minutes a day, in both English and Spanish, and ask questions about what they read.

💬

Ask Your Child About...

There are 10 crackers on the plate and 3 more in the bag. Can you count on from 10 to find the total?
What would you see on a map of a country? Can you tell me what a border is?
Can you sing me the continents and oceans song? Which continent would you like to visit?
