Happy Monday! This Friday we'll be celebrating Book Character Day and birthdays! If students have their matching book (to their costume), please send it with them. If your child has a birthday this week, reach out to your room parent so they can coordinate and help organize Friday's birthday celebration.
This week, we will finish Topic B and begin Topic C. Students are using the Read–Draw–Write process to make sense of addition and subtraction problems and are learning how addition and subtraction are connected. We'll also begin solving problems with an unknown part by counting on or counting back. Try asking your child to explain how their drawing shows their thinking when solving a problem.
This week in literacy, first graders are exploring informational texts in both English and Spanish through our unit on endangered animals. Students are learning to use text features—such as images, captions, table of contents, and titles—to find and understand key information. In Spanish, we're also practicing reading and writing words ending in -as and -es and reviewing words with Z and C, while paying close attention to singular and plural forms like veloz/veloces, lombriz/lombrices, and avestruz/avestruces. In English, students are focusing on habitats and how animals adapt to them. Each student is researching one endangered animal that they will study throughout the unit. Please continue to support literacy growth by having your child read at home every day for 20 minutes in both languages.
