What We're Learning Lo Que Estamos Aprendiendo

Welcome · Math · Literacy Bienvenida · Mates · Lectura

From your teacher De tu maestra

This week is our last full week of school before the Thanksgiving holiday, and we are feeling especially grateful. We've shared so many joyful moments with your children already this year, and we deeply appreciate all the ways—big and small—that parents and family members support their learning and enrich our school community. On Tuesday, teachers will have extended planning time in the afternoon, and students will enjoy special activities led by Imagination Stage from 12:00–3:00 p.m. We look forward to a wonderful week together!

This week, we will be relating addition and subtraction by solving math facts. Students will write related number sentences and draw number bonds. At home, give your child a math fact such as 8 + 2 = 10 and have them tell you the related subtraction fact (10 − 8 = 2). For an extra challenge, give your child three numbers and have them write all four related facts (for example, with 10, 8, 2 → 8 + 2 = 10, 2 + 8 = 10, 10 − 8 = 2, and 10 − 2 = 8).

This week in literacy, students will continue building their informational reading and writing skills in both Spanish and English. In Spanish class, we will learn about the food chain and students will read to investigate where their research animal fits within it. In word study, we will work with the verb endings -aron, -ieron, and -jeron, as well as words spelled with g and j. At home, students can practice writing and reading sentences using the words gigante, jirafa, gemelos, gente, and mensaje. In ELA, we are beginning to learn about digraphs—two letters that make one sound—such as sh, ch, ph, wh, th, and ck. We will continue our study of endangered animals, focusing on the question: What does your animal eat? Please discuss the vocabulary words herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, predator, and prey with your child, read together for 20 minutes each day in English, and practice heart-word flashcards.
