This week we finish Module 5 with the End-of-Module assessment and then move into Module 6: Word Problems, where students deepen their strategies for solving story problems.

Try this at home — a compare problem:

Ms. Alvarez has 14 cupcakes. Ms. Ortiz has 7 cupcakes. How many more cupcakes does Ms. Alvarez have than Ms. Ortiz?

Ask your child to show their thinking three ways:

• A math drawing with labels (e.g., "Alvarez" and "Ortiz")
• A number bond showing 14 as 7 and some more
• A number sentence (14 − 7 = 7, or 7 + ___ = 14)

Why labels matter: when students label who/what the numbers stand for, they stop guessing at "add or subtract" and start reasoning from the story.

Por qué importan las etiquetas: cuando los estudiantes etiquetan a quién o qué representan los números, dejan de adivinar «¿sumo o resto?» y empiezan a razonar desde el cuento.
