It's almost Spring! This Friday is a Wellness Day so there will be no school. Enjoy the upcoming extended weekend!
This week in Module 4, students are solving comparison word problems with measurement! They measure objects using centimeter cubes, align endpoints carefully, and then compare two lengths to answer questions like "How much longer?" and "How much shorter?" They use cubes and tape diagrams to find the difference — for example, if a pencil is 14 centimeters and a frog is 10 centimeters, the pencil is 4 cubes longer. Students learn they can find the difference by adding cubes to the shorter length OR taking away cubes from the longer length.
Key vocabulary this week: measure, length, centimeter cube, longer than, shorter than, aligned, endpoint, difference.
How you can help at home:
• Ask your child to explain the rules of measurement — they've been learning to line up cubes with no gaps and start at the endpoint!
• If you have a ruler at home, ask them to measure objects in centimeters
• Try a comparison problem together: "A cucumber is 17 centimeters long. A carrot is 11 centimeters long. How much shorter is the carrot? What could you draw to show this?"

In Spanish, we are launching our exciting new Plants unit (Unit 4)! This first week, students will celebrate the lives and contributions of women who have studied plants, including botanists like Ynes Mexia, Janaki Ammal, and Wangari Maathai. Students will learn about each woman's work and write about why they celebrate her: "Yo celebro a _____ porque _____." We will also finish editing and sharing our narrative stories from the Family Traditions unit. In word study, we are working on past tense verb endings -é, -í, -ó, and -ió (for example: escribí, escribió, dibujé, viajé). At home, please practice reading and writing sentences using the words: envié, envió, abandoné, abandonó, respondí, and respondió.
In ELA, we are continuing to practice words with digraphs (two letters that make one sound) — keep practicing your heart words at home! In ARC, we will start the week by finishing and sharing our LAST Small Moment, incorporating what we learned from our Family Traditions unit. Then we will launch our exciting new Plants unit (Unit 4)! Our weekly question is: "Which is the most interesting plant you would like to study? Why?" Students will take a walk around the school garden to observe plants up close and write questions about what they see.
